Regionalizing tourism statistics

Motivation

In the advisory report Valuable Tourism (Rli, 2019), the Council for the Environment and Infrastructure (Rli) emphasises the importance of knowledge and data for better policy. The National Data Alliance has therefore elaborated a vision and strategy in the National Data Strategy for Tourism & Recreation (2023) to arrive at relevant data and insights with and for all parties in the tourism and recreation domain. An important data source for guests and overnight stays in accommodation is the SLA statistics of the CBS. These statistics are available on a national, provincial and COROP level. Because tourism-recreation policy is primarily shaped at regional and local level there is a great need for data at the regional and local levels. This project aims to explore the extent to which this need can be met and, if possible, compile the data for the desired area classifications.

Goal

The goal of the project is to explore the possibilities of creating data from the SLA statistics at the municipal level or the level of tourist-relevant areas, such as the Veluwe, the Achterhoek, or the Heuvelland. If these opportunities exist, the researchers will establish a method of embankment suitable for small areas by evaluating the current method and adapting it where necessary. They will also compile the data for municipalities/touristically relevant areas for the years 2022 and 2023.

Approach

The first work package focuses on exploring the possibilities of creating data from the SLA statistics for municipalities or tourism-relevant areas through access to the CBS microdata environment. With provinces and DMOs, we are also identifying what wishes there are when it comes to area classifications, in case creating data at the municipal level is not possible. The findings of this work package are compiled into a report. This work package leads to a go/no go moment as far as the following work packages are concerned.

This second work package focuses on evaluating and, where necessary, adapting the method for raising suitable for small areas. This will be done using several pilot areas. At the end of this phase, there will be a go/no go moment as to whether a method for embankment can be made for the pilot areas.

Work package 3 focuses on generalising the method for uplift. The result is an implementation in Excel, incorporating the developed method for markup. This allows the method to be used in the future within the Tourism Data Centre of NBTC and CBS.

This last work package focuses on compiling the data for all municipalities / tourism-relevant areas for the years 2022 and 2023.
