Societal value of tourism and recreation

What would the world and the Netherlands look like if there was no hospitality sector? An essential question in the times of COVID-19. That the sector is also deeply rooted in our society and contributes to that society, we demonstrate with our research for Gastvrij Nederland. We have given an insight into:

  • What the societal value of tourism and recreation is;
  • How this can be increased;
  • Whose responsibility it is.

We have mapped out the societal value of tourism and recreation across the full breadth of the sector (including domestic, incoming and outgoing tourism, overnight and day recreation, catering, sports, culture, business hospitality, transport of tourists and events).

New research maps the value of the entire hospitality sector for the first time

There is a big task ahead of working on sustainable economic recovery, restoring the well-being of all Dutch people and rebuilding an attractive living environment after COVID-19. A balanced development of tourism and recreation makes an indispensable contribution to this. The right preconditions are necessary to maintain and increase the positive social value of tourism and recreation. More intensive cooperation between governments, entrepreneurs and educational institutions and the active involvement of residents is necessary. This study describes the necessity and provides detailed substantiation for it. We call on governments at all levels - state, province and municipalities - to work with us to enable everyone to enjoy what the hospitality sector has to offer.
