Maximisation of the positive impact of Nature houses

Natuurhuisje wants to assess and rank the Nature Houses offered on their contribution to local diversity and sustainable tourism. Existing certification systems are less suitable for the more than 20,000 houses offered by small entrepreneurs on the Natuurhuisje platform. Natuurhuisje's problem is not an isolated one. Many accommodation owners, B&Bs, small hotels, and campsite owners struggle with the question of how to make their sustainability initiatives visible and which choices are the best when it comes to increasing their impact.

Goal

For Natuurhuisje, the existing criteria and questionnaires are evaluated and improved. A ranking system with weighting factors is subsequently developed. This allows guests to objectively consider the sustainability of the accommodation in their decision-making process. The project also aims to develop a method with which other providers of small-scale accommodations can rank and improve their sustainability via a self-assessment tool, as well as initiate actions for more sustainable guest behavior.

Approach

In the first phase, various certification systems are analysed through literature research to validate and improve the existing system as currently applied by Natuurhuisje. Through various workshops, the criteria and questionnaires developed for use in various countries and at different types of accommodations are tested for applicability and user-friendliness. In the final phase, the questionnaires, the weighting model, and the self-assessment tool are delivered.
