Sustainable Tourism Mobility Forum

27-05-2024 - 28-05-2024
Breda University of Applied Sciences

Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUas) and the Netherlands Board of Tourism and Conventions (NBTC) are organizing the first Sustainable Tourism Mobility Forum on Monday, May 27, 2024 with three additional workshops on May 28. The day will be organized in cooperation with CELTH, Polis, NECSTouR, the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate.

The organizers want to discuss the challenges of carbon emissions in the tourism industry. The focus of the Forum will be on the necessary transition and solutions to more sustainable tourism transportation modes like rail, coaches, and cycling.

“Through this Forum we bring together European transport and tourism stakeholders with speakers from Austria, Germany, France and the Netherlands. We will discuss sustainable pathways for long-haul and local tourism mobility, as well as business mobility”, says organizer and professor Sustainable Development of Tourism and Transport Nina Nesterova from the Breda University of Applied Sciences.

Theme

For the theme of long-haul and local tourism mobility, we will explore:

  • Collaboration between tour operators and rail transport providers,  experiences with night train operations;
  • Realities behind decarbonisation in the aviation industry and its impacts on the tourism sector;
  • Experiences from integration of tourism into urban and rural mobility planning.

We will inspire each other through the approach that France took to the development of mobility for the Olympic Games (summer 2024). Austria is following suit by facilitating night trains and will focus on directions of the future Dutch tourism and leisure mobility policy.

Business mobility will be addressed by looking into modern technologies to reduce business travel and by exploring possibilities for cross-learning between business and leisure tourism. To this end, you will be triggered by modern technology in our XR Stage (Virtual Production Studio). We will learn and get inspired by the experiences from the Travel Smart Campaign, led by Transport & Environment within a coalition of partners across Europe, North America and Asia.

For whom

This event aims to unite public authorities, industry players, start-ups, and universities at national, regional and European levels in tourism and transport.
