Get Your City Ready for Climate-Resilient Tourism – Sign Up Today
During New York Climate Week, a new phase was launched of the global initiative Destination Climate RiskScan, aimed at supporting cities in making their tourism sector resilient to climate change. CMOs and city councils are invited to participate in this groundbreaking project.
The Travel Foundation and international partners, including CELTH, are offering cities worldwide tailor-made climate risk profiles and strategies to protect their visitor economies from threats such as extreme heat, water shortages and forest fires.
Risk assessment and strategic advice
CMOs and city councils are invited to participate. They will receive a tailor-made risk assessment as well as strategic advice on how tourism and business travel can develop in a future-proof way that protects the destination's assets, maintains visitor demand and supports climate-resilient business operations.
‘It's time to consider climate risks as a core activity of tourism,’ said Jeremy Sampson, CEO of the Travel Foundation. ‘This new initiative provides cities with the tools and insights they need to look ahead, respond flexibly and build a tourism economy that can thrive in an era of climate uncertainty. We call on leaders of urban destinations to join us and work together towards a more resilient future.’
New York Climate Week
The announcement was made at New York Climate Week during a roundtable event hosted by FINN Partners and the Travel Foundation, where leaders from tourism and hospitality discussed how cities can adapt to climate pressures. Cities account for half of all international travel, while nearly 1,000 cities could face extreme heat by 2050.
Three climate grants
The project is supported by a coalition of leading organisations, including CELTH, Risklayer, Resonance, FINN Partners and Tourism HR Canada. Resonance is also offering three £5,000 climate action grants to support city participation.
‘Urban destinations need clear data and practical strategies to respond to the increasing impacts of climate change,’ said Chris Fair, President and CEO of Resonance. "That's why we are offering the Climate Action Grant to subsidise the participation of three cities and provide practical support. We are setting up a simple application process so that interested cities can apply. We hope this work will be a catalyst for new ideas and actions around climate resilience in urban tourism."
