Congress theme: Leisure for a Better Society

Industry Day: From Knowledge to Experience – Building Bridges between Science and Industry

Date: Wednesday 27 August 2025

Location: Breda University of Applied Sciences

Global congress, for the first time in the Netherlands

After 13 years, the World Leisure Congress (WLO) is returning to Europe and coming to the Netherlands for the first time. Hundreds of scientists and leisure professionals from all over the world will gather at Breda University of Applied Sciences. From 25 to 28 August, they will exchange the latest knowledge and insights around the conference theme “Leisure for a Better Society”.

CELTH Industry Day: bridging science and practice

The Centre of Expertise Leisure, Tourism & Hospitality (CELTH) is organising Industry Day at the heart of the congress. A day where science and practice meet and exchange insights. A unique opportunity to meet this community of tourism and leisure experts in your own country. Industry Day will be a day full of energy, interaction, connection and inspiration. No standard lectures, but dynamic sessions in which you get to work yourself, meet new people and work together on real solutions.

Keynote: Tourism as a force for social impact

The keynote will be given by Yvonne Nassar, the new director of NBTC. According to Nassar, tourism is more than just travel: it is a powerful tool for social, economic and ecological development. You will be the first to hear how NBTC is tackling this together with partners and what that means for your organisation at the CELTH Industry Day. CELTH will give a surprising plenary presentation in “silent disco style” about the new guide for measuring resident benefits. A hot and topical theme in the sector.

Unleashing energy in creative labs

‘If we do things the way we've always done them, they will remain the way they've always been.’ With this statement, Friso Visser of Brain Fuel immediately sets the tone for what visitors can expect at CELTH Industry Day. On this day, the creative change club Brain Fuel will introduce various interactive concepts that release a lot of energy and help us arrive at real solutions. Think of a “Human Lickert Scale” for more connection, a “Board of Directors” that challenges your thinking patterns, and “Context switching” to change perspectives.

Workshops: from climate adaptation to placemaking

In the workshops, we will tackle challenges related to space for recreation in the city, reducing single-use plastics, resilient, thriving and meaningful destinations, healthy placemaking, climate adaptation, the power of business events and leisure as a driver for (social) innovation.

Tours: discover Breda and the campus labs

In the afternoon, you can go on a tour of the host city of Breda off campus. Be surprised by technology and creativity with the Blind Walls Gallery, the Algorithmic Perfumery, Leisure in urban development and Breda Robotics.

On campus, you can explore the labs of Breda University, such as the XR lab, the Neuroscience lab and the Geo Spatial lab. You can also choose one of the four interactive workshops on Van Gogh Homeland, storytelling, scenario planning and accessible leisure.
