Hospitality sector shifts focus to employee retention and development

The hospitality sector, with approximately 700,000 jobs, accounts for around 9% of total employment in the Netherlands. This makes it a sector of significant economic and societal importance. At the same time, it is becoming increasingly clear that sustainable development is not only about attracting new employees, but also about how work is organized and how employees experience perspective in their careers.

Within the sector, there is a growing awareness that employee retention, engagement, and development opportunities are playing an increasingly important role.

New sector analyses within the Hospitality Pact, conducted by CELTH (Center of Expertise for Leisure, Tourism & Hospitality), show that organizations investing in future-oriented employment practices, development, and leadership are working towards greater continuity and resilience. Within the Hospitality Pact, CELTH is responsible for the research agenda and collaborates with Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUas), NHL Stenden, and HZ University of Applied Sciences.

This development forms the basis for discussions during the Hospitality Pact Event on June 8, where the insights will be further elaborated and discussed.

This report has been compiled by the Centre of Expertise in Leisure, Tourism and Hospitality (CELTH), in collaboration with ABN AMRO, Koninklijke Horeca Nederland (KHN), HISWA-RECRON, Stichting Vakbekwaamheid Hospitality (SVH), Rabobank, and Reiswerk.
