Indonesian-Dutch collaboration on sustainable tourism development

Witnessed by the Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Panjaitan, CELTH signed a Letter of Intent with DEL Institute of Technology regarding the development of sustainable tourism. The signing was carried out during the seminar on sustainable tourism and water quality on Lake Toba held at the DEL Institute of Technology. The seminar was also attended by the King and Queen of the Netherlands as part of their state visit to Indonesia.

Resilient tourism destinations in North Sumatra

In line with the Indonesian governments’ wish to create new tourism destinations, Indonesia and the Netherlands started a Living Lab on the development of sustainable and resilient tourism destinations in North Sumatra. With joint forces, the Living Lab aims to support the development of the Lake Toba region. The Living Lab is based on real-life settings, where educational and research institutes from both countries work together with local communities, entrepreneurs and governments. The Living Lab entails action-oriented learning, is experiment-based and has a long-term focus.

Future scenarios for Lake Toba

The kick-off of the Living Lab took place in Tuktuk, Lake Toba, where a two-day multi-stakeholder session was organised and facilitated by CELTH. The three partner universities of CELTH joined forces to conduct collaborative research in close cooperation with Wageningen University & Research, the University of Groningen and Tilburg University. During the multi-stakeholder session, the participants discussed future scenarios for Lake Toba as a sustainable tourist destination. Based on these scenarios, local needs regarding knowledge and skills development were identified, which will serve as input for the agenda of the Living Lab in the upcoming years. Joint projects by students from Indonesia and the Netherlands will lead to ideas and proposals for business development and investment.

The Living Lab is initially a 3-year effort supported by the Provincial Government of North Sumatra, the Dutch Embassy in Jakarta, the Dutch Consulate in Medan, Nuffic Neso Indonesia, IT DEL, CELTH and its partner University institutes, Wise Steps Foundation.
