Tourism & Hospitality new theme in research ambitions for universities of applied sciences

02-12-2021

On 23 November, the universities of applied sciences presented their research ambitions to outgoing Minister of Education Van Engelshoven: Practice-oriented research as a knowledge accelerator. The plans focus on 12 national themes, such as Health & Well-being, Education & Talent Development and Energy Transition & Sustainability. With practice-oriented research on these themes, the universities of applied sciences ensure innovation in the business community and the updating of education.

Success for the hospitality domain: Tourism & Hospitality has been added as a new theme in the research strategy. "A theme that is socially and economically very relevant and on which one of the pilots for the professional doctorate is being developed", states the Association of Universities of Applied Sciences. The practice-oriented approach in higher professional education has been given a clear place in the research landscape in the Netherlands, and the hospitality domain has gained ground through years of research efforts by the universities of applied sciences and CELTH authorities.

So plenty of opportunities! It is now important to further expand applied and academic research in the hospitality domain. The universities of applied sciences in the domain jointly have about 75 FTE of research capacity available to help the domain in its transition; task for both the educational and professional field to seek each other out more emphatically. CELTH plays a role in that matchmaking process. We do this, among other things, by collaborating with NBTC and CBS in the Data & Development Lab and the National Data Alliance and by joining forces with the broad field of work in the national Taskforce for the Hospitality Sector and by investing in relevant research projects. In our Agenda Responsible Destinations, which we will publish at the beginning of January, we place all our research projects in a sustainable future perspective for destinations and business communities. Because a lot of holy houses must be demolished to offer the sector a real sustainable perspective!
