Innovative Visitor Management tools for the Dutch tourism industry

12-06-2018

During the UNWTO Students' League Netherlands, six different teams competed for the title of best solution for Visitor Management in the Netherlands. Students from Saxion University of Applied Sciences, Breda University of Applied Sciences and NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences were challenged to find new innovative ways in three weeks to manage visitor flows in Dutch cities and regions.

Determine the course of destinations

Visitor Management has become an even more urgent challenge due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To make safe tourism in the Netherlands possible again with social distancing as one of the most important preconditions, a challenge around Visitor Management has been developed. The solutions range from apps focused on Visitor Management and Crowd Control, to Visitor Management platforms and a tool for VIP Experiences. The different solutions make it possible for DMOs to look at Visitor Management with different (young) eyes.

Winner Visitor Management challenge: GemQuest

GemQuest from Team Stenden’s For Future (NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences) has emerged as the winner of the UNWTO Students' League. GemQuest is an augmented reality game that allows users to find animated "hidden gems" through the camera on their phone. Based on the globally successful game "Pokémon Go", GemQuest combines the aspect of entertainment with Visitor Management as a future-proof resource that cannot be used only during corona times.

Sector and education are working on sustainability and innovation

A new group of ambitious students is ready to help the sector create solutions to the many challenges the sector is now facing. The organisation can look back on a successful kick-off. The universities of applied sciences are exploring the possibilities of further expanding and deepening the competition next school year in order to further strengthen cooperation between the sector, education and the government.
