CELTH research presented at annual Cascais Tourism Forum in Portugal

03-06-2022

Researchers Bernadett Papp and Jasper Heslinga attended the Cascais Tourism Forum, an annual meeting of the hotel and tourism industry in Portugal, in mid-May. Bernadett gave a keynote speech here in which the central question was to what extent COVID-19 has contributed to more sustainable travel behavior of consumers and what the sector and governments can do to allow consumers to choose alternative travel options.

The presentation showed that most groups of travelers are aware of the importance of more sustainable travel, but are not making that choice yet. Because tourism is strongly supply-driven, the entire chain of providers, from accommodation, transport to entertainment, must be made more sustainable.

The presentation is based on a study by the Dutch Center of Expertise Leisure, Tourism & Hospitality (CELTH) and the European Travel Commission (ETC) into the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on consumers' attitudes towards sustainable tourism. The study was the result of a collaboration between researchers from ETFI and BUas.
