Investing in the future of our domain with 'Professional Doctorates'

Since 2023, the seven universities of applied sciences in the field of Leisure, Tourism and Hospitality (LTH) have been working closely together to develop a Professional Doctorate. The collaboration itself is already a unique success, but the doctoral programme also offers a new perspective on innovation in LTH professions and in the economic sector.

The focus of the PD is not on theory captured in a starting a PD track.

There are already inspiring examples within the LTH domain. For instance, Roos Gerritsma is exploring the development of regenerative tourism in Amsterdam, aimed at improving livability and social cohesion. She is doing this in collaboration with field partners the City of Amsterdam and amsterdam&partners. Klaas Koerten, in his PD track, is working on innovative solutions and tools to make housekeeping work physically less demanding. In an interview elsewhere in this publication, Petra Kriek, Alma van Blokland, and Tilly Huurnink from Minor Hotels explain why they are eager to participate and how both parties benefit. Huurnink: “We enjoy testing new ideas and exploring together what works, what doesn’t, and what can be improved. Klaas needs us as field and operations partners to test on-site, and we need him and his students to further develop the solutions.”

These two examples are part of a group of fourteen LTH PD researchers currently active. Recently, the final positions have been opened. This presents a unique opportunity not only for professionals who want to take on the challenge of contributing to the sector’s innovative character, but also for companies and organizations that can receive support from universities of applied sciences to tackle their complex problems.

Participating in a PD track as a field partner offers companies and organizations three key benefits:

Innovation and competitive advantage: By investing in a PD, you gain access to the latest insights and innovative solutions that can be directly applied in daily practice. This helps you stay ahead in a rapidly changing hospitality market.

Tailor-made solutions: The research questions in a PD are defined by your company or organization. The results are therefore directly relevant and applicable to your specific business needs and challenges.

Networking opportunities: Participation in the PD programme offers your organization the chance to collaborate with universities of applied sciences, other companies, and government institutions, generating valuable knowledge.

My message to potential field partners is therefore short and to the point: invest in the future of leisure, tourism & hospitality with a PD track!
